"If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. If you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth." -from "Jacob's Ladder"- First post in 2008, yay! I hope everybody had nice holidays. Mine were a bit boring, but still nice. Shortly before New Year I got my first ever letter from the US from my online friend! It's so awesome. The letter was from Etherpendant, our beloved mushie-guildmaster in MapleStory. This was her Christmas present to the Jr. Masters of "Divinity". ^^ I was the only one of them living on the other side of the planet, so I was worrying about letter's safety. But it took only two weeks for it to arrive here. I took some pictures of the letter, so you could see its cuteness. ^^'

"Let me introduce a little "movement", or a little "trend" in the sound area that's happening in Japan right now. Music computer software is really progressing fast these days, and recently, there is software that when you input a melody and texts, a singer will sing according to what you wrote! Yes, no more vocalist needed!! But, of course it is quite different than a "real" vocalist, so it sounds strange here and there, but if you throw that off your mind, it is quite usable. You can be a "Music Producer", since you think of the lyrics, and the computer lady sings according to your tune that you typed in. This is really getting popular amongst some of the people in the music area. If I look back few years ago, this kind of thing was really really hard to do. But this software allows almost anyone to do it! It will not replace the need of a vocalist, but will hit the people who are a "wannabe Producer" people. Really interesting...... Not just music, but things like these that might trigger people's passion to "Create" is wonderful. This little "trend" is one of these. SO, for the people that wished that they can create, but did not know how, and this kind of innovative breakthrough happens not just in music, but in visual and literature, maybe really "New" things can be born!! How wonderful that would be!!"

Meet Hatsune Miku, "the first sound of the future", as her name states. Just another j-pop singer, yet a very special one. She has a number of original songs, but she also did a lot of covers: from the usual j-pop and trance to levan Polkka, from "You Wa Shock" to "Sakura Chirari", from an opera in German to a capella versions of NES and SNES classic tunes... "Wow, she's, like, hyperactive!" you'll say. Yup, she is. And she doesn't even have an album yet, though there are rumours it may be released soon.
Now, what's the secret of her lightning-fast growing popularity? It's not really a secret. Miku Hatsune is a digital person, a computer-generated voice, a j-pop oriented part of the Vocaloid2 singing synthesizer software by Yamaha. But the quality of the digitally generated voice has never been so good (and cute!) before, many composers started writing songs using this computer voice as a singer, and the result - Hatsune Miku is now the first j-pop idol of the digital era, with fanbase not any less dedicated than of any other real j-pop idol. Like one of her fans said: "If they made a concert with her as a hologram, it would've been a sell out." And that's quite true.
You haven't heard any of Miku's songs yet? Then you should, by all means, listen to some, if only to just get a taste of the future Japanese have brought upon us once again. I recommend starting from "Packaged", one of Miku's greatest hits:
Go, Miku-tan!

Ayako Saso - A Voice from the Past |
] |

Went through the city today.
The weather really suits my mood. The air is chilly and smells of fallen leaves. The clouds are dark, the sky is gloomy, and only somewhere far away sun is trying to break through, but fails. Stong wind plays with the leaves, spinning them in miniature whirlpools. I fit the environment perfectly - dark green coat and sweater, black jeans - I look just as gloomy as everything around me. I walk through the park, thinking about many things. Even though it's 4 PM, I meet only rare passersby. Here's a tourist, trying to take a picture of a long empty street, covered with leaves, here's a loving couple, hugging and kissing, not paying attention to others, here are two little girls, going to ride the swing... And it feels so foreign and distant, as if I live in another dimension. Most of the people sit at their homes now, no one wants to go outside. Changeable wind turns my hair into a mess, covers my face with it, raises it up. But I don't care. No one cares. It feels like the city is dying, dragging me along with it. But in a few minutes I'm home. Nice and warm. The city is left outside. Nothing matters anymore.
Nothing but you.

- It's all so brief, isn't it? Typical human lifespan is almost 100 years, but it's barely a second compared to what's out there. Wouldn't be so bad if life didn't take so long to figure out. Seems you just start to get it right, and then... it's over. - It doesn't matter. If we lived 200 years we'd still be human. We'd still make the same mistakes. - You're a pessimist. - I am Russian, doctor. We understand these things.
- Babylon 5 -

"Why is this time of the year always so hard...?" This was the only phrase I saved as a draft to start my entry with. But now that I look at it, it sounds funny. For some reason it's the second summer that turns out to be somehow dramatic for me. But these are not the things to be put in LJ. Life feels like a big vortex that takes you wherever it wants.
I've made a recording some time ago. It's my guitar arrangement of the track "Sunlit Earth" by Kou Otani from "Shadow of the Colossus ~Daichi no Hokou~" OST. Nothing special, the track is pretty simple and short, just a single guitar, but I like it. I didn't plan to make any arrangement of it, it just came out naturally. Toff - Sunlit Earth (guitar arrangement ver.) I've also made a tablature of it, so if you need it, leave a comment.
And as for the story about "Alchemy" from my previous post. It's $9.95 for Audigy users...
Also, an Illuminati symbol, the famous Eye of Providence, is present on our new 500 UAH banknote. So New World Order controls Ukraine as well. No surprise.
And I'm sorry for not posting much. I rarely in the mood of telling something these days.

I've just finished "Dreamfall: The Longest Journey". And I'm overwhelmed. I now call it a Xenosaga of adventure games. To say that "The Longest Journey" series have a great story would be to say nothing. It can really compete with the best console story-driven cinematographic games, Japanese or not. I take back my words about it lacking humor. It was like that only in the beginning. And I take back my words about worse voice acting. Voice acting is just as perfect as in the original, it's just felt some of the characters sound kinda apathetic, but it was delusive. People say "Dreamfall" is short? It was long enough for me. I've heard opinions that "Dreamfall" is very good, but it can't compare to the original. Lies. Well, it has less puzzles and more story per unit time, but that's just a matter of personal preferences, I'm perfectly fine with that. If you're a fan of interesting, deep, mysterious stories, it's a must play. But start from "The Longest Journey" first. I wonder what "Dreamfall: Chapters" will be like, how many Chapters will be released, at what price, for what kind of PCs... Ragnar Tørnquist made me his puppet.
Anyway, what else is new... 3rd job advancement in MapleStory. From Wizard to Mage, yay!
What else, what else... Oh, yeah, I've played "Dreamfall" with EAX enabled. I was able to enable it in Vista (that doesn't have old hardware sound acceleration at all) with the help of "Creative Alchemy" software for X-Fi, but the funny thing is that I did it on Audigy 2. I'm starting to dislike Creative very much for their craving for money. They've been releasing soundcards with EAX support - EAX3, EAX4, EAX5... For every new version you had to buy a new soundcard (with some exceptions). People say that OpenAL, which is supported in Vista, is much more flexible, but with EAX Creative could simply get more money. New game → new EAX → new soundcard → more money for Creative, a perfect formula. But when Vista came out, EAX no longer worked. So Creative developed an application to bypass internal OS commands and to enable hardware acceleration again for different applications - a piece of software called "Creative Alchemy". The beta came out this March. But it was stated to be X-Fi only. So people who wanted EAX support in their games in Vista needed to buy Creative's latest soundcard. Then, around June or so, Creative announced that they start working on "Alchemy" for Audigy series of soundcards. And then, one guy posted a patched version of "Alchemy" on Creative's official forums. He said he simply removed a check for EAX 5 hardware support to enable it to work with Audigy cards, and for EAX 4 and 3 to enable Live! series of cards to work with "Alchemy". It was that simple! It was ready since they first released it in March. So the "start of working on "Alchemy" for Audigy series of cards" was just another big lie. They were just waiting for people to buy more X-Fi cards... What Creative did in response to that patched version was the release of a "new" version of "Alchemy" people thought to be increasing compatibility, but its most significant change was the dll encryption with Macrovision to prevent its further patching to add support for older cards. Also they've added a licensing service to "Alchemy". Some people think they plan to sell the Audigy version of "Alchemy" to Audigy users. Thanks you very much, Creative. We love you too.

"The flowers will one day cover the walls and ruins, and man's creation will be forever lost to nature..." - April Ryan, The Longest Journey -

I like how this picture turned out. It makes a good wallpaper too. With it I feel like I'm looking out of my window through my monitor. Too bad my window doesn't always have such a view, beautifully painted by nature...
I no longer work for the company I worked for over the past few months. And I don't regret it at all. I left on my own accord. I have enough reasons to do that. In general, they want you to do more then they pay you for. And the attitude of the boss leaves much to be desired, to say the least. I won't get into details, I'm just glad I'm over with that company. And besides, by leaving now I'll get my summer vacation I wouldn't have gotten otherwise, since one has to stay in the company for a year to earn a vacation. The funny thing is, since I still haven't been enrolled there officially, I didn't even have to write a letter of resignation, or even warn my boss beforehand. Suits him right. He called me though, I didn't pick up... yeah. I still need to give him back his book on HTML. >>; I don't want to meet him again... My family supported my decision, after what I've been telling them, complaining almost every day. They only wanted me to find another job first, to switch jobs instead of just leaving and staying at home, searching for a new one. But I really had enough of that already. It feels so good to wake up late, play games or watch DVDs all day, mmm...!
Meanwhile, I finished "The Longest Journey". How could I miss this great game, I don't know. It looks like many people ignore TLJ for no reason. The greatest voice-acting that deserves a medal, very interesting and deep story that grabs you right from the start and holds you till the very end, good music... I've also tried an official Russian localization of that game. It sucked big time. Now I'm playing "Dreamfall: The Longest Journey", the direct sequel. And it's just as great so far, with a slightly worse but still very good voice-acting and with less humor, but with better music and beautiful graphics, and, of course, with the story that's just as great too. I heard complaints that the game's short, but for me it's quite long already, and I haven't finished it yet. Ragnar Tørnquist is now on my list of the most respected people in game industry. And even though he'll soon take me through pain of getting "Dreamfall: Chapters", I don't regret becoming a fan of this series.

Today when I was coming back home, I saw a bird, a blue tit that flew into our building's entrance. It was trying to escape, but couldn't find the way back and kept flying into windows and falling on the floor over and over again. I tried catching it, but it was too scared and kept flying away from me. I then tried to make it fly back to the first floor, but instead it flew up. I chased it up till the last, fifth floor and decided to catch it when it gets tired. It took a few more minutes. The poor bird was scared the hell of me and was so desperate to escape, but couldn't hold on much longer. After it hit the window one more time, it grabbed some vertical wires, but slowly let its grip loose and fell on the floor again. Poor bird. I could grab it this time. It chirped, but so hard it sounded like honking. I tried to grab it as gently as I could. It was so shocked, tired, its beak was opened. It stopped honking once I grabbed it though. I tried to pat its had. ^^ After I took it back down, I put it on the asphalt near the entrance, hoping it to fly away. But it remained where I put it. So I grabbed it again (it started honking again) and put it on some kind of flange our building has, otherwise people could've just stepped on it. It remained sitting, no, lying on the flange on its belly, it was so tired it couldn't even sit on its legs. I stayed there and looked. It then slowly started coming to senses. First it sat on its legs, then closed its beak. I stretched my hand towards it but the bird flew up, sat on an abat-jour above and started looking down at me. I then went up to my apartment, and from my balcony I could see the bird. It was sitting there, looking around, listening to twittering of other birds. After it finally calmed down, it flew to the nearby tree, started chirping, and surprisingly, more of its fellow blue tits instantly gathered around it and started twittering and chirping. It looked like our hero bird was telling others its terrifying story. It was so funny and cute! ^^

"Sundays are made for sleeping in. Sundays are made for walking around in baggy clothes, watching movies, nursing headaches and hanging out with your friends at the café. Sundays are NOT made for going to the worst neighborhood in town to find a kid who might be able to give you the information necessary to infiltrate a powerful cult that plans to take over the known universe. That's what Mondays are for."
- April Ryan, The Longest Journey - Am I always tired or just lazy to update my poor ignored LJ? I think the latter. Oh, well. When will I be able to force myself to update...?
My boss wants me to make a website for some school. Fast. Starting this Monday. I even have to go to that school with a camera and take pictures of the headmaster and the teachers. Is that a smart idea? No. Why? Because this is gonna be my first website. Do you know how first websites turn out to be? Mmhmm, exactly like that. I feel sorry for that school now. But that's not my fault, I've been told that I need to learn to make websites in the future. But not that fast! Before I even started doing what I was actually applied to do - managing our company's website. I'll tell you a secret, I suspect this is because my boss feels uncomfortable to pay me just for sitting there all day without a real job, heheh. But still, he wants me to learn Photoshop, Flash and Dreamweaver in less than a month...! Maybe even in the process. We'll see how it turns out in the end, but I have a bad feeling about this...
Me and two of my friends have upgraded our PCs. Simultaneously. Long story, but now I finally have a dual-core CPU. Which is quite necessary in Vista. So I'm quite happy. My PC is more balanced now.
Other than that, nothing interesting, as usual. For those who haven't noticed, I turned 23 a few weeks ago. It was Friday the 13th again, just like 23 years ago. Speaking of Friday the 13th, this year's gonna be the 700th anniversary of the arrest of the Knights Templar. Mysterious number.

I've abandoned my poor LJ again. For shame! Oh, well, I'm so lazy to update it sometimes, and most of the time there's nothing to write about. And I started to write this entry yesterday, but then went to sleep. (For those who saw me online at 1 - 4 AM yesterday and the day before, know that I was sleeping at that time xD;) Okay, let me try to remember what has happened since the last update...
- I became a moderator on SweetSdesu, due to recent attack of spam-bots. I hope I'll be able to find some time to check it out from time to time. Fortunately, with all those additional anti-bot protections genji has implemented there won't be a lot of moderation needed.
- Watched SweetS' "Wings of my heart" and "Earthship Tour 2005" DVDs at last. I needed to watch those ages ago. Gotta love the Cessna part.
- Got myself a few PS2 games that I didn't have yet for some strange reason, those including Final Fantasy XII, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria and Kingdom Hearts II.
- Watched "El Labirinto del Fauno" ("Pan's Labyrinth") yesterday. It's a good movie. Interesting, beautiful, kind, sadistic, cruel and sad fairy-tale for adults. I know this doesn't make sense, but that's how it is. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece of all times, but I recommend everyone to watch it at least once. 3 Oscars out of 6 Oscar nominations are another example of how good the movie is.
- Watched Kamelot's "One Cold Winter's Night" DVD. Amazing band, beautiful live performance, and the song "Abandoned" almost made me cry.
- Got for myself "Yoshiki Symphonic Concert 2002 with Tokyo Philarmonic Orchestra featuring VIOLET UK" DVD, a real jewel to add to my collection.
- On my friend's birthday we went to "Sakura-kai" again (our local sushi-bar, if you don't remember). It was fun.
- And happy birthday again to Etherpendant, our beloved Mushmom 8D!
Other than that, nothing really interesting happened.
In this entry I wanted to congratulate all the females with 8th of March, since it's International Women's Day. But I was too tired to finished the entry yesterday. Sorry .__.; I don't know about the US or other countries, but here it's an official holiday. So happy belated 8th of March, girls! Snowdrops are the most popular present here for this day.

Hello from Windows Vista! Yes, I've installed it. x64 edition. And I'm already sick from all that Microsoft vs. Apple rants that I hear everywhere. I can care less though, since it's almost impossible to buy a Mac here. I've got mixed feelings about this operating system. It's pretty, it's stable, it's bulky and requires a lot of time for relearning it's changed functionality. Gotta go though all those FAQs, in-depth guides and tweaks all over again. *sigh* The majority of the 32-bit programs can run on this 64-bit version pretty good though. This is my first experience with a 64-bit OS, and overall it's quite a nice one. The most funny thing was with MapleStory. It didn't work in Windows XP after the recent Gameguard update. When I tried to start it in Vista, Vista said that this program has known compatibility problems with this operating system, please obtain compatible version an so on. I chose "Start anyway", it updated Gameguard again and worked! xD So I'm not sure if it's because MapleStory developers fixed Gameguard's problem, or because it's so amazingly "incompatible" with Vista, but now I can finally play again. And in the meantime the developers announced a patch for MapleSEA that will make it compatible with Vista. I wonder what they're up to. Maybe Gameguard's not working properly, and if they "fix" it, I may not be able to start the game again. I hope this won't happen anymore. >_>
And one more thing. Google's Master Plan. I knew it all along. See, who's your rival now, Lainay?

Damn, I don't update often. I just don't know what to write, some kind of apathy is taking over me recently. Well, not entirely, but enough to not to have anything to write here about. Oh, well...
Windows Vista is near. And I so don't want to move from XP. I just don't want to go though all the troubles again. In 2001 I switched to XP from Millennium, when no one wanted to change. Back then it had more reason than current XP --> Vista upgrade. And now Vista comes in two different versions in a single box - x86 and x64, and this means trouble once again, since x64 version is better but worse... Gah. And the software/hardware incompatibility again, modded drivers problems, constant search for new versions of everything, reformatting of HDD (since Vista needs 15Gb of free space on a system disk). I'm gonna stick with XP for some more time, thank you. But Vista looks so nice, ah.
And nothing interesting here apart from new music and movie experiences. Finally listened to "Poets of the Fall" albums, they're very good, just what I expected, and even a bit more. Their video for "Lift" is strange but actually quite interesting. Their another video, "Carnival of Rust" is even more strange, with a lot of hidden meanings, but I have a hard time finding a normal link to it. Next, I've finally listened to Schiller - Tag und Nacht album. I wanted to listen to it, since one of the songs features Tarja Turunen, ex-vocalist of Nightwish, and one of my favorite female singers. It appeared to be some kind of dream-style electronic stuff that reminded me of Robert Miles in his dream techno days. I liked it. No news in j-pop scene for me so far. *feels sad* Movie news. Watched "Hard Candy". Liked it. Creepy, but cool, I like good psychological thrillers. And kinda interesting topic. If you watch the trailer, you'll know what I mean. Watched "What Dreams May Come" again, last time I've seen it long time ago. I like this movie. It's a bit too sweet and childish at some moments, but overall it's very sad, beautiful and romantic, I totally recommend it to everyone who still haven't seen it for some strange reason. It finally snowed here, now it looks like a real winter...

I like winter nights.
P.S.: LJ's new rich-text editor doesn't work for me. I'm using Semagic to create this post. Feels more convenient to me. If you post in LJ, I think you should try this program.
